I first met Ivan (Funkboy) Bodley
in 2003 when made my Transatlantic move from Athens
to New York City.
He was playing bass with the house band in this amazing place,
club, recording studio, which was located in my neighborhood,
Midtown Manhattan ,
called Le Bar Bat.
I remember the freezing cold night i walked into this place,
and through the corridors and walls decorated with gold and platinum records
from artists and bands such as Jimi Hendrix,
John Lennon and
The Rolling Stones,
who used this huge, spacious, wooden room to get the best drum and live sound possible.
On their break i went up to the stage, introduced myself
and i gave him my Greek CD “Fota Tou Iliggou”, so he could get an idea of what i was doing,
and asked him,if he liked what he heard,to contact me so we could do some gigs together.
That was that.
We have been playing together ever since.
He played bass on my “Transblues” record and for the last four years we regularly
play together at BBKING`s.
Last Friday, another freezing cold night, just as the first time we met,
he played with his own trio at the Blue Note,
songs form his recently released instrumental cd “Pigs Feet & Potted Meat”.
His presence, music and bass skills warmed the room, our hearts and soul
and we left the place humming “Pigs feet and potted meat”
although we are vegetarians.
